We went through a major deaccession recently. Our policy was that anyone
involved in the deaccession decision-making process, or in a position to
advise or influence that process, could not bid (all items were sold at
public auction). That excluded all Board, all Collections/Acquisitions
Committee, all staff, and all Restoration Committee members. That left
other volunteers and our members free to bid. Everyone understood, and
the fact that we were clear and explicit in all of our discussions and
promotions that we were following an open and ethical policy smoothed
the process. And all the items still sold, and we were fine.

Subject: Deaccessions and volunteers/membership

At the moment, our collections policy states that employees and Board
members, their families and representatives, cannot acquire items from
the collections that have been deaccessioned.

Do any of you include your volunteers and general membership in that
exclusion? I am facing a potential situation where a volunteer has shown

interest in a collection piece that is in discussion for possible
deaccession.

Thank you for you input!
