 Dear Margaret,
Where I used to work (a prominent white walled
modern art gallery) there was a permanent "no red wine
or juice" clause. The only exception to this rule was
if there was a sit down dinner. Only at tables with
table cloths with the guests seated could red wine be
served (this was only allowed under very special
circumstances too).

I suspect almost all museums, art galleries, and most
historical societies have this rule. I have been
mildly challenged by the rule but not usually by the
originators of the event. It's usually the guests of
the people throwing the party that complain about it.
I found that if you explain to people why you can't
serve red wine or juice they usually hear you out.

 Best, Gerald Rojek
