At the Milwaukee Public Museum we use interactive carts, Stop Spot carts, frequently but we have not eliminated our guided tours but, similar to other museums, they are requested less and less. The carts are something that volunteers and docents can sign out and still feel they are a valuable contributing part of our interpretive program. We also have window interpreters which are people stationed at very popular exhibits as well as exhibit interpreters which roam an exhibit hall. These all have different levels of training and commitment but choice and flexibility, as you know, is key for accommodating both the needs of visitors and volunteers.

Subject: Guided Tours vs. Interactive Carts

I am wondering if any other museums have made the change from traditional guided tours to interactive carts for their visiting school groups? With the number of active volunteer docents dwindling, the challenges with training new docents, and the need for more hands-on/interactive elements to engage students we are considering moving to carts. Instead of a docent guide, teachers/chaperons would take their group to whichever exhibits and carts they would like. Teachers would be able to request specific carts depending on the needs of their students.

If not carts, what other solutions have you all found to make your visitor experience more interactive, and not overwhelm your docents with training?

Thank you!
