Texas Memorial Museum, University of Texas at Austin
 
A short course, Care of Collections, is being offered at the
the Texas Memorial Museum, in association with
International Academic Projects, London
 
The aims of the course are to provide practical up-to-date information on
object deterioration, how to monitor deterioration and how to minimize it.
This refresher course is designed to meet the needs of all museum
professionals who care for historic and artistic works.  There will be ample
opportunities for group discussion and general networking.
 
Topics to be covered include:
*What museum objects are made of, how they are constructed and how they
deteriorate.
*Monitoring temperature, relative humidity, pollution and light.
*How to interpret monitoring results to evaluate damaging effects of the
environment.
*How to evaluate the ability of the museum building to protect the collection
and how to improve internal conditions.
*How to provide the best conditions for objects in storage and on display
through the use of correct materials, storage containers and climate control.
 
The principal lecturer will be Robert Child, Head of Conservation, National
Museum of Wales, Advisor to the National Trust U.K. and visiting lecturer for
the International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and the Restoration
of Cultural Property (ICCROM) in Rome.
