I am seeking information on successful semi-permanent cultural/ethnic
heritage exhibits aside from those at Ellis Island, the Institute of Texan
Cultures and Old World Wisconsin.
 
The Tampa Bay History Center is formulating concepts that will examine the
history of immigration through Tampa Bay between the 1820s and the 1920s.
During that time immigrants of African, Anglo-European, Caribbean, and
Mediterranean heritages came here to work in the cigar factories, ports,
railroad, phosphate mines, agriculture, citrus and shipbuilding industries.
 
We plan to focus on their areas of origin, cultural "baggage" including
languages, foods, religions, costume, music, traditions, etc.,the
challenges they faced here and successful individuals who contributed to
area society and development. An important component will be to highlight
positive role models - and to perhaps convince kids that success amounts to
more than making it in professional sports or as a "spokesmodel."
 
Any references to what you feel are significant or "powerful"
installations would be much appreciated.
