This is called deaccessioning, a common practice in museums.  As stated in
the AAM Ethics guidelines, museums can deaccession objects not central to
their mission, using the money either to purchase other artifacts or to
use for direct care of collections.  This is what Shelburne has done.
They have gotten bad coverage in the general press.  They deaccessioned
French Impressionist paintings from a museum that collects Americana.
