Good evening, Museum-lers – One of my first experiences of working in front
of the public is from a summer internship at the Fine Arts Museums of San
Francisco (M.H. deYoung Museum) when we were cleaning/washing/preparing the
tapestry collection in the very large indoor courtyard (Hearst Court) for a
very large exhibition. It didn’t matter what written didactic materials we
had out, people wanted to speak directly with a human (sometimes to the
point of stepping around the didactics and over the tape barriers to tap
someone on the shoulder) and have what was happening explained verbally.
Always, within 30 seconds of finishing the explanation, the next group would
be stepping up and the person would have to start over again. That person
literally could have talked all day! It is very difficult to actually be
working on anything and talking to the public at the same time – something
about the public actually wanting eye contact! <g>

Perhaps you can have your conservators actually video-taped doing the work
and play that video when they are not present (or when actually trying to
get some work done!)

Two questions:
1) Have you done this sort of project before? Any learning experiences or
advice to share?

2)What videos can you recommend?
