If I am understanding your question correctly, I don't see why increases in salaries can't be given. Are you suggesting that the staff are personally benefiting from the museum's resources? It is my understanding, that their work furthers the mission and they are rewarded for doing so. Board member can not be paid, but staff are hired for their expertise and are financially rewarded for working in an ethically and legally resonsible manner. Salaries can not be exorbitant, because that would imply they are personally benefiting from the museum's nonprofit status.

These are thoughtful questions and discussions -- thanks. Our museum funds are extremely limited (probably not too unusual for small museums), so they are considering allowing copies for a fee. I'm sure the money collected would go into some kind of general fund, but it IS a 501(c)(3) non-profit facility. Since the "director" is a beginner, I hope that as her knowledge and skills increase, that some kind of increase in salary is planned.

I have a Master of Library Science, but I've never worked in a museum, so all of this is new (in a way). Libraries and museums have so much in common that I can see possible dilemmas.
