The Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, Behring Center seeks a senior museum
educator with strong administrative skills and extensive program development experience to manage
the Hands on Science Center. The award-winning Center is a 2,000+ square-foot facility where families,
adults and school groups can experience real science in a historical context. Its unique approach
engages visitors actively in exploring the interactions between science and society.  Currently, visitors
may use historic evidence and scientific tests to explore the conservation of the Star-Spangled Banner,
conduct a 19th-century test for water pollutants, or determine the radioactivity of objects. Responsibilities
include management of three full-time staff, eight part-time paid explainers and a corps of volunteers;
planning and development of educational programming, website and products to complement new
exhibitions and the Museum’s collections; fundraising and donor relations.

Selective factors:

Ability to supervise, including hiring, organizing work and directing staff including volunteers
Knowledge of museum education methods and of audience evaluation techniques
Knowledge of science

Quality Ranking Factors:

Ability to organize and implement complex and multiple projects
Skill in managing a budget
Skill in communicating orally to diverse audiences
Skill in writing for diverse audiences and products
Knowledge of the history of science

This position is limited to 18 months to two years and may be extended. Salary range from $53,156 -
