Cynthia,

We are engaged in a project designed to make the MARC fields work for museum
object cataloging. We hope to find software that will accommodate MARC
formatted cataloging of objects and the collections management tools that
museum curators and registrars need.

It is not easy and sometimes it feels very strained. I think that sometimes
the library systems are the problem more than MARC itself, though it does
force a different kind of thinking. You do have to reevaluate how you
catalog. I have developed an Access database that attempts to use the MARC
fields and format, but I don't know how successful it is, since I am the
sole user.

It is possible that being able to set up a cataloging form yourself would
make the task easier. Or perhaps constructing your small database and then
transferring those records into the library system (not really very
efficient). If you would like to know more, you can contact me off-list.

Good luck!

I would be interested in hearing if any of you use MARC as a tool for museum
items.
I am in a museum setting inside of a public library system so I am forced to
use MARC.
Experiences?
Feedback?
Suggestions?
Thank you,
