You should check out the high-pressure water mist fire suppression system just coming on the market for museums in the US. Mist systems have been used on cruise ships for years. These systems quickly form a cloud in the building when triggered, using very small amounts of water. The mist extinguishes the fire, without soaking down the contents like a conventional water system or fire hoses. Unlike gaseous extinguishing agents, mist can be used in historic houses that are not tightly sealed. Small, flexible plastic water piping can be used so that it is less intrusive to install than conventional water systems. There are also gaseous extinguishing agents that are available to replace Halon. For information on the various suppression alternatives for museums and historic houses, you could contact Nick Artim at Fire Safety Network, [log in to unmask]

Rowan Oak, William Faulkner's home is undergoing restoration. It has
a halon system in place now. One room has an outline for "A Fable"
written on the wall. While the home is undergoing construction we
would like to replace the halon system with a non water based fire
supression that will not endanger guests if it should trip. Any ideas?
