As a small response to Greg Dahl's question, I don't know about
internships, but there is an interesting display concerned with
immigration/emigration/forced emigration at the Maritime Museum at
Albert Docks in Liverpool (UK) which attempts to capture the
experience of slaves being sent via Liverpool to the USA. It forces
people to face up to significant issues connected to slavery. The web
address is:

I'm sure that other UK museums could help with issues connected with
the movement of the Scots and Irish to N America in the 19th C. A
useful starting point could be a major university (eg Glasgow) and
its history department, where there is certain to be an expert on the
highland clearances and associated emigrations.
