Hello, all:

I am pleased to announce that the NY Hall of Science has just  
published "Intersections: Art at the New York Hall of Science,"  a  
catalog documenting and interpreting 40 works that have been either  
commissioned or acquired by the Hall in the past 20 years.

It is an extraordinarily handsome publication thanks to the excellent  
design work of Xanthe Willer, the Hall's in house Art Director, with  
a large collection of original and archival photographs.  It is also  
substantial,  with a fine introductory essay by Anne Balsamo, the  
Director of Multimedia Literacy at the University of Southern  
California and President of Onomy,  an innovative exhibition design  
company. Her essay contributes significantly to the understanding of  
the historical and cultural context of interactive exhibitry as art  
in the past century.

At the heart of the publication is the extraordinarily diverse,  
energetic, and thought provoking work of 26 artists ranging from  
those who are familiar to the science museum world, like Ned Kahn, to  
art world stars like Sandy Skogland and Ben Schonzeit (both of whom  
created work for our new preschool area). There is a section  
featuring Charles and Ray Eames' Mathematica (the Hall owns the only  
complete copy of this exhibition in existence), and pieces by  
emerging artists who work at the intersection of art and science.

Our hope is that this catalog will continue and focus the productive  
dialogue between art and science learning that was initiated at the  
Exploratorium three decades ago.  It is clear to us that art in  
science centers can be an avenue for engagement that reaches new  
audiences and offers access to multiple ways of learning.
