November 11, 2004: Duke University Libraries seeks a fulltime digitization
specialist.

Under the direction of the Manager of the Digital Production Center, the
Digitization Specialist will produce high-quality digital images and
digital surrogates of library and other university holdings, including
reserve materials and rare or fragile materials. The Digitization
Specialist will: create digital images and documents from a variety of
source material following best practices for scanning, quality control,
metadata creation, tracking, archiving, and storage of digital objects;
maintain, troubleshoot, and help resolve problems on a range of high-
performance digitization equipment and tools, including imaging software,
flatbed scanners, large-format and overhead scanners, and digital cameras;
input metadata and statistics into databases; provide instruction on
scanning tools and standards to library staff and University clients.

REQUIRED:  BA/BS or higher. Two years experience using digital cameras and
scanners in a production environment; an excellent grasp of digital
imaging benchmarks (bit depth, resolution), common digital formats and
compression schemes (TIFF, JPEG, GIF, PDF) and their appropriateness for
different purposes; knowledge of techniques for adjusting image data
(tone, color, scale) to achieve fidelity with originals under controlled
lighting conditions; and an understanding of the standard ways of
delivering digital objects over the World Wide Web (HTML, XHTML). Must be
detail-oriented and possess excellent organizational and project-
management skills, strong oral and written communication skills, and an
ability to work independently and effectively in a collaborative setting
(or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience).

PREFERRED:  Professional training or experience in digital photography or
graphic arts; demonstrated expertise in the creation and management of
digital information in a library, archive, or museum setting; experience
using asset management tools (i.e., DigiTool, CONTENTdm, Luna Insight) or
scripting languages (i.e., Perl, Java, VB); experience with optical
character recognition (OCR) or the creation of full-text resources using
the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI); experience digitizing audio or video.
