I would recommend the following museums:
Madrid
Reina Sofia Museo de Arte Contemporaneo (Jose Girao, Director)
El Museo del Prado
Museo de Bellas Artes

Barcelona
La Caixa (outstanding international private collection)
Museo de Picasso
Antonio Tapies

Sevilla
Museo de Bellas Artes

Also, you should consider making trips to Bilbao (worth a day or two once in
Barcelona) for the Guggenheim and Museo de Bellas Artes and to Valencia (an
easy weekend jaunt from Madrid) for the Instituto Valenciano de Arte
Moderno. There is also a new Picasso Museum being constructed in his
hometown of Malaga. Carmen Gimenez, former director of the Ministerio de
Cultura and curator for the Guggenheim Museums, is directing this project.
She would be a great resource for your research.

I hope this helps.

Buen viaje!
