Dear Abdullah,

I write this now as a member of the advisory board to the New Jersey Human Relations Council. As a legislative body of the state with twenty state partners we are on the alert throughout the state to proactively support our fellow Americans, the Arab American community, and to get
the word out that any, ANY, slur or action against an individual in this community will be treated as a bias crime. I hope you also saw on the news how the mayor of New York City, and our President George W. Bush and former President Bush have let it be know nationally that we rally
with each other as Americans, and not look to place blame on innocent bystanders.

There are pockets of rumors, for example here in New Jersey, and the Bergen Record newspaper acted swiftly to address its inaccuracy.I will forward to you off list news about ecumenical services taking place throughout the country, bringing together all religions and particularly
one community with a service that was concelebrated by the Jewish and Muslim religions. And if you have some suggestions to contribute to our efforts, I welcome them heartily. We in New Jersey recognize and celebrate the fact that our richness is in our diversity and that we are a
microcosm of the entire country.

I have seen a post on the internet urging people to show support also by purchasing the new stamps honoring Arab Americans which were issued by the post office on September 1 so I pass that along to our museum community.

Thank you for your post because at a time like this open communication is very important to offset inaccurate information that comes out of fear or ignorance.

Warmest regards,

Terri McNichol
