1998 COLLECTIONS CARE AND MAINTENANCE TRAINING PROGRAM
             February 8-27, 1998; July 13-31, 1998
                     Kansas City, Missouri

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The pupose of the program is to improve the care of collections
in museums and historic sites by providing currently employed museum
professionals with information, hands-on training, and skills in
caring for collections. Through 30 days of lectures, demonstrations,
hands-on workshops, and behind-the-scenes tours of area historic sites
and museums, participants learn to examine, document, photograph, and
monitor changes in the condition of collections. They are trained in
packing, storage, construction of safe exhibit mounts, and the use of
standard available equipment for these processes. They learn to set
priorities for collections maintenance and care, establish long-range
plans, and take immediate steps where needed to preserve collections.

Participants are required to complete a practicum project at their
institution during the intersession to improve the care of their
collections and to report on their project in a presentation during
the second three-week session of the program.
