You may want to check "Cosmic Music: Musical Keys to the Interpretations
of Reality." It is editted by Joscelyn Godwin and contains translated
essays of ethnomusicologists Marius Schneider, Rudolf Haase, and hans
Erhard Lauer. I think you will really like Schneider's work. If you are
interested in Chinese music folklore, let me know and I can give you
sources on that as well.
