I think there is a truism in exhibit design which holds that the more
temporary, flexible, convenient, and portable a wall system tries to be,
the less dignified it is as a background for the display of art.  I'd
recommend forgetting about walls that heal themselves and just use drywall
(sheetrock) with plywood behind it.  You will have to patch holes, but its
not all that difficult.  It will give you a flat, seamless, professional
wall.
