I'm in charge of our collections database imaging project & in charge
of okaying images for our Web page.  Simply put, I'd say you've
answered your own question: it doesn't take much deliberation to
realize that 72 dpi thumbnails or the like are all that's required
for either  database viewing or a Web page (most monitors can't
reproduce more than that) and better-quality material should
obviously be kept for income-producing licensing.  (Unless the
individual museum doesn't care about this source of revenue, which is
of course is its perogative. But one cannot change one's mind later,
after giving everything away... )  Good luck!
