Commemoration, Conflict and the American Landscape

This conference will be held on November 12, 1999 at the University of Maryland, University College in College Park, Maryland. This symposium brings experts together to discuss the complex nature of the meanings, uses and treatments of battlefields and military landscapes. Speakers will include scholars and managers who are involved in the caring of and the policy making for battlefield landscapes. The program is open to a wide range of professionals, scholars, students, and interested public. The conference will be organized to explore three themes related to battlefield landscape interpretation and preservation: The Historic Landscape, The Memorial Landscape, and The Conceptual Landscape. These themes are often contentious issues confronting site managers, interpreters, scholars, and the public. They may arise not only from differences in opinion, but also from conflicts concerning the precise landscape theme encountered. A discussion of the various ways to interpret landscapes will help show that many variables need to be considered when undertaking any plans to interpret, restore, or stabilize a landscape. Registration fees are $45 general and $25 students (with copy of ID). For more information or to register, consult our web page at:
