ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE COMMEMORATION OF
THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF
THE OLD VILLAGE MUSEUM IN KUMROVEC, CROATIA

Dear Sir or Madam,

The Old Village Museum in Kumrovec will celebrate its 50th anniversary with
many activities, including an international symposium entitled "Authentic
Places and Memorials as an Open-Air Museum", from June 4 to 7, 2003.

In 1952, a large number of restorers, architects, historians, ethnologists,
political scientists, sociologists, horticulturists and other experts
participated in the restoration and transformation of the house which was
the birthplace of Josip Broz Tito into a memorial museum. This
interdisciplinary approach to the restoration, reconstruction and
revitalization of the old center of Kumrovec was continued with intensity
during the past two decades.

Today, the Old Village Museum is the only open-air museum in situ in the
Republic of Croatia and is entered in the Register of Cultural Landmarks in
the first category. It occupies a surface area of 128,107 m2, which
includes the renovated town center of Kumrovec, the residence of Josip Broz
Tito surrounded by a spacious park, the late baroque manor house of Count
Erdody, meadows and cultivated land. The renovated town center occupies a
surface area of 39,261 m2, on which there are 21 restored residential
houses, an old elementary school, 10 agricultural objects, a blacksmith's
workshop, 2 corn silos, 2 pigsties and 5 wells. In 18 objects renovated in
the style of the authentic architecture of Hrvatsko Zagorje, there are
permanent exhibits depicting the traditional way of life, customs and
crafts from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The renovated objects
are museum exhibits in their own right, because each was renovated on the
old foundations in the authentic manner.

The Old Village Museum is a specific open-air museum in Europe because it
is not fenced in. The reason for this is that within the museum, several
autochthonous families are living in the newly built houses that
architecturally respect the cultural heritage, without disturbing the
authenticity of the preserved rural ambient.

In order to justify the existence of the museum, great attention has been
devoted to educational content, including the museum workshops, practical
instruction to students attending trade schools and colleges, and
demonstrations of old crafts and trades in the exhibition space and around
the picturesque museum exterior.

For decades, the Old Village Museum, only 60 km from Zagreb, has been a
well known, recognizable and gladly visited destination for tourists. It
is located in the northwest part of Hrvatsko Zagorje, surrounded by
medieval fortresses, noble residences and manors, near the border with the
Republic of Slovenia. Every year, the museum is seen by a large number of
visitors from the whole world who are brought here by tourist
agencies. There has also been growth from year to year in the number of
individual and family visits, especially during weekends.

After 50 years of building and transformation, the Old Village Museum has
grown into a distinguished open-air museum memorial with the cultural
component of an ethnological museum, which is highly conducive to the
modern scientific interdisciplinary approach.

                                                 Very truly yours,
                                                 Dunja Saric, M.S.
