GW Center for Professional Development in Washington DC Announces the following Fine and Decorative Arts seminar in April:

The ABCs of Oriental Carpets (CWAS 546)
Instructor: Michael Wendorf

Carpet weaving represents one of mankind's earliest, richest and evocative forms of traditional artistic expression. This course provides students with a simple and easy to use framework with which to look at, understand, appreciate and judge any oriental carpet. Within this framework, students will learn to understand the distinction between city, village and tribal carpets. Once this distinction is grasped, students will quickly learn a basic rug vocabulary that will allow them to place any oriental carpet in its proper context and assess its quality. This course also provides students with a popular hands-on learning experience in so far as it is taught using carpets from distinguished private collections and local dealers.

The April course will offer a unique opportunity to visit an exhibit of carpets from Northwest Persia at George Washington University's Brady Art Gallery. The exhibit is in the DC area this spring only in conjunction with the International Conference on Oriental Carpets. Students will also visit The Textile Museum.

Dates: April 25-April 27; Times: Friday 2:00pm-6:00pm; Saturday and Sunday 9:00am-6:00pm, Location: 2020 K Street NW, Washington DC, Cost: $461
