Due to overwhelming response requesting the list, I decided to post it to Museum-L. Enjoy! Maybe we can start a "cheap hotel" FAQ for different cities around the world.

Last month I stayed at a place called Manhattan Broadway for $79 per night.
Nothing fancy, but it had in-room TV & phones and a fairly roomy bathroom.
It's on 38th St. (near 8th Ave.), an easy walk to Penn Station, the main bus
terminal, and Broadway. It was a pretty good deal.

best cheap place i've found to stay in NYC is Edison Hotel in Times Sq.
Clean, comfortable, and nice art deco lobby.

I would second the recommendation given by Abby Allen. On my last visit to
New York I stayed at the Pickwick Arms Hotel on the east side (51st
Street, east of Third Ave.). It was clean, affordable and conveniently
located in a safe area. Try them on the web at:

I stayed at the West Side YMCA when I interned at The Cloisters. At the
time, a single room was fairly cheap for NYC ($60 or so, if I remember
correctly.) the location is safe and the rooms are clean.

 Hope this helps.

Dear Deb,
I stayed in the Harbor House B&B on Staten Island during Thanksgiving.
They have a website (sorry I don't have it right now) and are very
reasonable. The trip to Manhattan without a car is over the Staten Island
ferry which is free. A metro bus pass costs about 17.00 for one week. I
know they have many international visitors. Good luck to your friend.

Deb,
The Riverside Towers at 80th and Riverside, 212-877-5200 charges $85 plus tax.
