An exceptional job opportunity with the Virginia Museum of Natural History 
is now available. The mission of the Virginia Museum of Natural History is 
to interpret Virginia’s natural heritage within a global context in ways 
that are relevant to all the citizens of the Commonwealth. VMNH is 
constructing a new 90,000 square foot, purpose-built facility, which is 
scheduled to open in the Fall of 2006.


If you meet the qualifications for Librarian, we invite you to apply to

As Librarian, you will be responsible for procurement of materials; 
overseeing loans and organizing the library collection for maximum 
accessibility. The Librarian will manage the bibliographic catalog 
database; is responsible for original/copy catalog entry; maintains the 
authority files database; upgrades OCLC hardware and software as necessary; 
and supervises volunteer staff.

This position requires knowledge of the principles, theories, and skills of 
library science; a knowledge of general library procedures; the ability to 
catalog a wide range of materials; a basic knowledge and ability to use 
reference tools; knowledge of professional cataloging principles – Library 
of Congress MARC formats, AACR2 cataloging rules, Dewey Decimal system, 
Library of Congress Subject Headings, Library of Congress and OCLC 
Authority Control; knowledge of OCLC policies and procedures; ability to 
adapt standard usage to the needs of the library; ability to modernize 
bibliographic information for the online database; excellent written and 
oral communication skills. 

A Master of Library Science or Library and Information Science degree 
preferred.

The Librarian will be heavily involved in assisting with the move of the 
library and archive materials to the new facility. This is expected to take 
a minimum of two (2) years to accomplish. More information about our
