The George Washington University Center for Professional Development
Announces the following course for jewelry appraisers, jewelry lovers and collectors:

Appraising Antique Jewelry (CWAS 536)

The goal of this course is to introduce students to the process of appraising antique jewelry by acting as a detective from the beginning examination through to research on the article for final valuation. The course begins with an introduction to appraising antique jewelry, including learning to use off-site tools, and identifying the socio-economic conditions that influenced the function and development of styles from the Crystal Palace Exhibition to the early part of the 20th Century. The course will also examine the history, pricing, and valuation of modern and antique-cut diamonds, and old mine vs. new mine gems found in antique jewelry. We will also explore reproductions vs. forgeries, an overview of hallmarks and assay marks, construction methods, and the process needed to determine the appropriate research, market and value for an article of jewelry from examination of the time to final valuation. Students need to bring a 10x power jeweler's loupe, and locking jeweler's tweezers.

Dates: March 7- March 9; Time: Friday 2:00pm -6:00pm; Saturday & Sunday 9:00am-6:00pm; Tuition: $461, Location: Washington DC - 2020 K Street NW, Instructors: Lynne Loube and Pennye Jones-Napier
