Those of us fleas on the back of the small beaver sleeping fitfully next to
the enormous elephant lying a tad south of us are used to the problem, which
is certainly not confined to North America. The Kiwis feel the same about
the Aussies, the Austrians about the Germans, the Flemings about the rest of
Belgium, the Scots and Welsh about the English, etc., etc. We are all
products of our histories. This being said, I must say that I believe you
are misinterpreting the response to your message.

This IS an international list and there is a good deal of messaging from
outside the USA. My feeling is that members on this list are worried about
how much they would miss, were the list to fragment. There already is
fragmentation, of course, with a number of specialist groups having separate
lists.

I certainly have no problem with a multicultural and multilingual list and
one DOES see messages on MUSEUM-L in, inter alia, German and Spanish and the
odd one in Strine. Stuart Park and I even lob the odd bit of Maori at each
other. I can't recall any American feeling upset at the prospect. Museum
folk, wherever located, have far more in common than that which divides them
and our US colleagues are not exception to thge rule.

Don't despair!
