Moving On-Line: Crossing the Digital Divide
December 6-10, 1999

The Center for Museum Studies announces a new workshop
designed to prepare staff working in community-based
museums, arts and cultural centers to translate their
research and history skills to new media, and use the
Internet to supplement their educational and public
service
mission. This workshop, made possible through a generous
grant from the Nathan Cummings Foundation, will take place
at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC.

Application Deadline: October 8, 1999

Moving On-Line will combine theoretical approaches to
interpretation on the World Wide Web with practical
instruction in web site development. Selected participants
will produce or enhance their organization's web site and
will work jointly to develop an on-line exhibition at the
Center for Museum Studies web site.

This workshop is intended for staff from institutions
having budgets less than $250,000 and having five or less
full-time staff. Selection criteria will be based on
demonstrated basic understanding of Internet capabilities
and experience in developing and producing exhibitions and
public programs. Participant institutions must commit to
maintaining and building organization web site beyond the
term of this program.

Fifteen participants will be selected. There is no fee for
the course. Through a generous grant from the Nathan
Cummings Foundation, each participant will receive a
financial award to be used toward travel and lodging
expenses.
