HI David - I checked with a friend and colleague who is a tinsmith and
historian of all things tin. He commented

" Think the item is machine made (machine stamped on the end). Probably
part of an oil lamp. This seems to be the reservoir tank. Would probably
fit on rest of lamp upside down if that pin that shows partially is really
attached to a ball stop.
The painting on the piece indicates it was probably made in a factory --
last half of the 19th century -- someplace like the Dover Stamping Company."

I know there is a reproduction catalog for the Dover Stamping Company that
may help you further identify this piece.

Good luck with the hunt...
Best, VivianLea

I appreciate everyone's input!.. We have a few smudge pots here, and they
are huge things.. About 4 feet high. We thought it was some kind of
container for gas or oil, but weren't sure. I agree with Becky and think it
is this some type of old gas tank.. It has some type of pin it the top..
But this could be where it connected to the engine.. I will show these pics
to our collections curator..
Thanks so much!
