And .. just when we all thought this topic was ready to be "laid to rest"
.. I did some quicky research and found (oh golly now don't ask me where
..) a reference to a need in the past to sleep upright .. so that one might
keep an eye on the fire .. (either to ensure it did not go out .. or flame
up and engulf the 'ol homestead)

It boggles the mind .. the "stuff" one can dig up online ..
