We did this at a previous job and found that unless there is a staff member
or volunteer stationed at the kiosk at all times, the results were tainted
by individuals who were fooling around with the kiosk (i.e., teenagers). We
also found that the results were definitely skewed towards younger visitors,
since in that particular institution the senior visitors typically felt
uncomfortable when faced with the technology and tended not to participate
(there were, of course, exceptions). Again, having a volunteer stationed
there did a lot to encourage such visitors to take the survey and helped
them navigate the technology. People were also more inclined to take the
survey if they knew up front how long it would take: an introductory screen
indicating that there were only 10 questions and that the survey would take
X minutes to complete resulted in more participation and thus more reliable
results. An incentive to complete the survey also helps (they are entered
into a drawing, they get a free pencil from the gift shop, etc.).

Subject: Survey Kiosks

Hello all! I am the new director of marketing at the Levine Museum of the
New South (Charlotte, NC) and one of my first charges is data collection,
data collection, data collection. I would love to hear any advice or
thoughts (i.e. good vendors) on installing a kiosk in our lobby to have
visitors take a survey on their way out ... and possibly having other
stuff (restuarant recommendations, downtown map) on it. Since I am new to
the list-serve, I apologize if this is a topic that has already been
covered.
Thanks in advance ...
Jill
