Hello there, on the subject of jobs.......
I am currently finishing a graduate diploma in Museum and Gallery Studies
at St Andrews University, Scotland, having already completed an M.A. (with
honours) here in Art History and Medieval History. Even with these
seemingly tempting qualifications, from a well-looked-upon university, I
am finding it hard to get employment. I am not looking for my ideal job,
with my ideal salary, nor looking to stay in one place - I am from the
south east of England, studying in Scotland, with contact in the south
west and north west of England too, plus access to London. I don't even
know what my ideal job is, although I do know that I would like to be paid
something for my trouble, as it is hard to live on thin air.
It seems that it is hard to ever have enough qualifications or experience
for anything. I wouldn't mind doing documentation, learning conservation,
doing exhibition work or even just researching for a living, or a leg-up
into the world of museums. I don't doubt that I'm in the right field
however - I love having even the merest chance at introducing others to
the magical, exciting worlds of history and art available to them.
To end then, we are not all griping about the state of jobs because we're
expecting too much, but simply because there really is a problem with what
we would like to do. We're too desperate, and too hopeful, for our own
good!

Sarah

PS I'll consider internships (paid ones), part-time or full time work,
ideally in Britain but also in other English-speaking countries (my French
isn't quite what it used to be). My interests cover the English country
house, the Arts and Crafts Movement, costume, zoology, book illustration,
the blues, yoga, volunteering for the National Trust, brewing, and
dancing. E-mail me for more info........
