One avenue to explore is to check with your state Arts Council and also with your state's Center for Nonprofits, if you have one. In the states I've lived in over the last 10 years, those organizations have often led workshops on finding individual and group insurance (where the group is something other than an employer), aimed at artists, independent contractors, and uninsured nonprofit workers. These are sometimes held at state offices, but I've also seen them offer to travel to an employer-based location to talk to a group about insurance options.
