Prior to 1992 when the Friends of the Museum was a
separately incorporated organization, museum employees
had to pay to join FOM.

Subsequent to governance change (from county to
private management), the Friends group morphed into
the museum's membership and staff were automatically
granted membership as an employee benefit.

Depending on what benefits this category of membership
gives to an employee. the IRS or your state equivalent
may consider it a taxable benefit and you'll be
required to pay income taxes on the fair market value
of the membership.

Employee members received a very stripped-down version
of membership -- no calenda, newsletter or magazine
mailings, limited invitations to events, no premiums
-- presumably in order to avoid having to report the
membership as a taxable benefit.
