A number of you have indicated you have had difficulty
breaking into the museums field. Though you have
gotten interviews, you have been the unsuccessful
candidates.

I subscribe to the Hot Jobs Job Tip of the Day
Newsletter. Today they have some excellent subtle
interview tips (yesterday they had a great one about
etiquette and interviewing). I am forwarding these
for your benefit.

THIS WEEK'S TOPIC: IMAGE, PRESENCE AND SELF-BRANDING

NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION

Words count. But nonverbal communication will override
your words every time.

Use these tips to help you build trust during your
interviews.

l. Be sure your entrance is energetic, positive and
friendly. Move your ribcage up as you stand and sit.
Your clothes will look better and you will visually
slim down five to 10 pounds. Smile. It will be
immediately returned back to you.

2. Carry everything on your left side so you can offer
your right hand in a firm, friendly handshake. Your
handshake should be offered right away with a clean,
dry hand. Whatever firmness you receive should be
offered back. Generally approach every handshake as if
it will be firm.

3. Make eye contact until you have noticed the color
of the interviewer's eyes. This generally takes three
to five seconds. Using this method, you will move
beyond face contact to true eye contact. You will be
viewed as more trustworthy, confident and competent.

4. Maintain eye contact both as a listener and as a
speaker. If you are speaking, it will show confidence.
If you are listening, it will show respect.

5. Videotape yourself in mock interviews on a frequent
basis. People who land the best jobs are not
necessarily the ones who have the most educational
credentials. They are the ones who can project and
sell themselves confidently on the interview using a
combination of verbal and non-verbal communication.

Susan Bixler, president of The Professional Image,
Inc., is the most widely quoted author/consultant on
corporate image. She has written five best-selling
books. Her new CD-ROM focuses on how to brand yourself
during an interview.
