When I was in graduate school, a famous classicist (not a total oxymoron)
delivered a public lecture to inaugurate his tenure of a very prestigious
visiting chair.

As he had filled his water pitcher with gin, he became progressively
incoherent, eventually stopping in mid-sentence and walking off the stage.
He topped this, however, at a subsequent seminar, when he fell off the
podium, broke his leg, and had to leave the university without completing
his tenure of the visiting post.

It's not funny, I suppose, but at the time we thought it was a riot.
