Libraries and Archives across the country are involved in this exact sort
of work and I am sure there are many who could answer your questions
directly. You might consider posting your question to the digital library
listserve (Digital Libraries Research mailing list
<[log in to unmask]>) or looking into sites like the Berkeley
Digital Library sunsite (http://sunsite.berkeley.edu/) which has a great
deal of information on the subject as well as useful links, such as Howard
Besser's page on Imaging (http://sunsite.berkeley.edu/Imaging/Databases/).

In your general area, I might also look into work being done at the
University of Virginia at Charlottesville in their Institute for Advanced
Technology at http://jefferson.village.virginia.edu/.
