AAM and ICOM are two very important general museological organizations.
AASLH is another, as is CAA (College Art Association -- despite its old
name, this association encompasses museologists, art historians, and working
artists, and has close ties with other organizations which may be of
interest, such as Renaissance art, Italian art, Nineteenth-century studies,
etc.). Other important organizations to join may be topic-oriented, like
DEMHIST, ICOM's International Committee for Historic House Museums. For
example, in this group questions and problems specific to historic house
museums are addressed. Annual conferences -- such as the upcoming conference
in Amsterdam, October 2002 -- are held which also give members an
opportunity to share their work in a professional setting. Every effort is
made to publish the Acts of the DEMHIST conferences which also helps members
add titles to their curriculum vitae. The ICOM web pages have the long list
of all their subject-oriented committees
http://www.icom.org/internationals.html For DEMHIST, you also may go
directly to http://www.museobagattivalsecchi.org and click on DEMHIST in the
lower right hand (English-speaking) column, or you may write me at
