Hi Andrew:

I am in the process of converting an old collections database in Access to
PastPerfect so I'm not yet familiar with the nomenclature options. That
said, the Visual Resources Association http://www.vraweb.org/ might be
helpful to you. They are in the process of publishing "Cataloging Cultural
Objects: A Guide to Describing Cultural Works and Their Images" in part,
to address this very need you've identified. It is available in draft form
here http://www.vraweb.org/ccoweb//
