Conservation Scientist (Interdisciplinary), Smithsonian's Museum
Conservation Institute

The Smithsonian's Museum Conservation Institute (MCI) is seeking a
Conservation Scientist with a specialization in applied spectroscopy or
modern materials science to conduct research in the general area of
organic analysis of museum collections, objects, and artifacts.  The
research scientist will participate in interdisciplinary and
collaborative studies at MCI that may involve collections from some or
all of the 19 Smithsonian museums, with an emphasis on detection and/or
degradation of modern materials and polymers.  An instrument
specialization in one or more of the following techniques is essential:
stable isotope ratio mass spectroscopy (IRMS), gas chromatography mass
spectroscopy (GC-MS, Py-GC-MS), dispersive or FT Raman spectroscopy
(Raman), and/or infrared spectroscopy (FTIR).  The successful
applicant's research focus should have relevance to the care,
preservation, and characterization of art, historical, archaeological,
natural history, and/or other museum objects.  

The position is Full Time Career/Career-Conditional with a salary range
of US$69,764 - 90,698 per year.  It is interdisciplinary and may be
filled under any of the following disciplines and qualification
requirements: Research Biochemist, GS-0401; Research Plant Physiologist,
GS-0435; Materials Research Engineer (Plastics), GS-0806; Research
Materials Scientist, GS-1301; or Research Chemist, GS-1320.  Application
is open to citizens or nationals of the United States.

Open Period: Monday, August 4, 2008 to Tuesday, September 2, 2008

This position is located at the Museum Conservation Institute (MCI) of
the Smithsonian Institution (SI), in Suitland, Maryland, just outside of
Washington, DC. MCI is a research institute of SI; its mission is to
increase and disseminate scientific knowledge that improves the
preservation and conservation of museum collections and related
material, and contributes to the enhancement of their contextual
