ASSISTANT TO THE OWNER/ MANAGER OF THE GALLERY
Responsibilities include:
=09*Facilitating sales
=09*Supervising the upkeep of gallery space; arranging displays,=20
labeling objects, etc.
=09*Greeting and assisting the general public
=09*Maintaining computerized inventory and client databases
=09*Assisting in exhibition planning, catalogue production, and=20
public events.
=09*Supervising interns and/or part-time gallery assistant
=09*Assisting the owner with processing correspondence and appraisals
=09*Maintaining consignor and client files
=09*Researching; describing, measuring, and packing objects
=09*Answering telephone inquiries
Job Structure
=09*Period of employment is from June 1, 1996 through June 30,=20
1997. =20
=09*Tuesday through Saturday, 10 - 6 pm, Thursdays until 8 pm
=09*Possibility of extending period of employment.=20
=09*First few weeks are spent learning office and gallery=20
procedures, and becoming familiar with material the gallery=20
offers. At the end of the period of employment, the assistant=20
is responsible for soliciting applications for, interviewing,=20
and recommending his/her replacement, and spending the last=20
few weeks training that person to take over the position.
Skills
=09*Personable, energetic individual with an interest in art=20
(background in art history preferred)=20
=09 to work effectively with collectors, curators, and the general public.
=09*Flexible, self-motivated, and able to work well without supervision
=09*Ability to coordinate short- and long-term projects
=09*Excellent organizational skills
=09*Computer literacy; the gallery uses Word for Windows 6.0 and=20
Access 2.0.
=09*Good typing and general office skills
=09*Management/retail experience helpful=20
Salary/Benefits
=09*Salary is on an hourly rate. The salary for thirteen months is=20
=09 approximately $20,000 June 1, 1996 through June 30, 1997.
=09*Health insurance is provided =20
=09*Upon satisfactory completion of the thirteen month period, there=20
will be a bonus of $1500-$2500, raising the overall pay to=20
$21,500-$22,500. The bonus would be forfeit if the employee=20
does not complete the thirteen months.
=09*Paid holidays inlcude Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, or a day=20
=09 during Hanukkah, and New Year=D5s Day. In addition there are three=20
=09 paid days of vacation available, not to be taken during the first
three months of employment. Unpaid vacation days are arranged on =
a=20
case by case basis.
THE GALLERY
=09Hurst Gallery was founded almost fifteen years ago and has an=20
international clientele including many museums and collectors. Located=20
in the Harvard University campus, the gallery exhibits and sells African,=
=20
Native American, Oceanic, Asian, Pre-Columbian, and Ancient art and=20
artifacts. =20
=09Exhibitions are frequent and past catalogued sales include Art=20
and Artifacts of Melanesia, Native American Basketry, African Arts of War=
=20
and Peace, Art and Artifacts of Polynesia, Visual Diplomacy: Art of the=20
Cameroon Grasslands, and The Ancient Southwest. Numerous uncatalogued=20
exhibitions are also organized. A left-bid silent auction is conducted=20
twice year with a corresponding illustrated catalogue.
