Select a separate designation for each wall (i.e. North, South, East, West or A,B,C,D). Number each log starting from the sill (bottom) log with the wall prefix and then the log number (the bottom logs would be N-1, S-1, E-1, etc.).

We've used metal and/or paper tags attached to the outside face of the log using roofing or some other heavy duty nail. Lots of photos and sketches during the process help as well. Good luck!

Subject: [MUSEUM-L] Taking a log cabin apart

We are going to be taking apart a small log cabin. I am trying to figure out the best way to number the logs to ensure that the cabin can be put back together again some time in the future. We also need to figure out the best way to attach the numbers to the logs. I do not want to use tags but the logs are very dry. Do you have any suggestions on numbering methods or materials?

Thank you
