VAAA FACT SHEET
9706-06 ______ Please Copy and Distribute

VISUAL ARTS ALBERTA ASSOCIATION is a non-profit Provincial Arts Service
Organization (PASO) that seeks to facilitate and encourage greater
appreciation and understanding of the significant contributions by the
visual arts to the quality of life in the Province of Alberta.

The PASO concept of nine disciplines covering the arts in Alberta was
initiated by the AFA in September 1996 in response to a business plan of the
Honourable Gary Mar, then Minister of Community Development. The formation
of a provincially mandated visual arts organization was initiated by the
Alberta Community Art Clubs Association, the Alberta Potters’ Association,
the Alberta Society of Artists, and the HandWeavers, Spinners & Dyers of
Alberta (the only four visual arts organizations that historically received
operational funding from the AFA). Visual Arts Alberta Association was born
and an Executive Director was hired to establish a PASO for visual culture,
as had other disciplines, such as craft, writing, dance and theatre, with
their respective PASOs - Alberta Crafts Council, the Writers’ Guild of
Alberta, Alberta Dance Alliance and Theatre Alberta. The continued
endorsement of the AFA Board is that the PASOs are the major interface
between community and the Province. Clive Padfield, Executive Director of
AFA described the relationship. “The PASOs are the conduit to the community
and are the major interface with the Province.”

Although the role of VAAA is that of the designated PASO for visual culture,
please note that VAAA is not just a method of distributing funds to visual
arts organizations. Fundamentally, it is a service organization, primarily
mandated to disseminate information and facilitate communication among all
members of the art community and the general public, regardless of whether
they are individual visual artists, visual arts groups, visual arts
educators and institutions, or public and commercial art galleries. In
closing, I emphasize that the delegated responsibility of the VAAA is to
serve Alberta’s entire visual arts community. The Honourable Shirley
McClellan, Minister of Community Development and the Alberta Foundation for
the Arts Board continue to endorse this responsibility and role for not only
VAAA but also for all the PASOs.
