Position Available: Education Programs Manager

Fulltime position: Education Programs Manager at PRI's Museum of the
Earth in Ithaca, NY

Description: Museum of the Earth (MotE) at the Paleontological
Research Institution (PRI) seeks an individual to develop, coordinate,
and implement educational programming for school groups, community
groups, and public visitors to Museum of the Earth. MotE educational
programming makes accessible the history of life on Earth, the
processes by which the Earth system works, and the science by which we
understand it.

The overall responsibility of this position is to foster a dynamic,
interactive learning environment within the Museum that maintains both
high standards of educational quality and high visitorship. Main job
responsibilities include booking and tracking information regarding
education programs, delivering programs and leading tours of the
Museum for approximately 5,000 preK-12 students each year, managing
PRI research partnerships in which school and community groups and the
general public participate in ongoing paleontological research,
implementation of summer programming for children and families at the
museum, developing interdisciplinary programming in science and art,
and helping reach underserved urban and rural audiences. Additional
duties also include assisting with teacher development workshops,
maintaining educational materials and teaching collection of
specimens, answering education correspondence, and representing PRI at
public events.

Position also involves partnering with Ithaca's Discovery Trail
organizations, Cornell Cooperative Extension, and with science
education outreach providers at Cornell University. This position also
participates in state, regional, and national education initiatives.

The Education Programs Manager works during peak visitation of Museum
(regular schedule of Tuesday-Saturday) and on some holidays and
special events. The position also includes travel for programs within
about 2 hours of Ithaca and possible  travel to state and national
conferences. This position reports to the Director of Public Programs
and works closely with museum docents and museum operations staff.

Qualifications: Bachelors degree required. Advanced degree in an area
of Earth system science, museum education, museum studies or related
field preferred. Minimum of 2 years experience in museum education or
similar informal education venue preferred. The ideal candidate has a
passion for Earth sciences and informal education, excellent written
and oral communication skills, and experience working with diverse
audiences. Candidates should be a dynamic instructor, with excellent
interpersonal skills and be comfortable with hands-on inquiry based
education. Candidates should have reliable transportation (travel
reimbursed) for commuting to outreach programs and local meetings.

Position begins February 2008.
