I have also been trying to figure out how best to deal with this, and to
make it clear in the identification that a digital reproduction is often a
very different object despite the fact that it began with someone taking a
photograph.
When I get a work of art that is entirely digital, such as on CD/DVD or
with a programming component, the piece is noted as digital media for its
object type. The physical media then becomes CD/DVD, etc.
I personally have always separated photographic prints from other print
forms. Images on photographic emulsion paper that were made from digital
images instead of negatives are photographs in my book. If printed on a
laserjet(lambda) printer, an inket(iris/archival ink print) printer, or
some other form of liquid/powder media printer they are prints,
irrespective of their origin.
I know some people who prefer to categorize objects by their original form,
so all images from a camera, digital or otherwise, are photographs. I
simply prefer to make the physical media more important in the object's
identification than its ultimate origin.

We are trying to figure out if we should make a separate category in our
classification system for digital media (mainly, images on CD-ROM that we
purchase from the photographer).
Are any of you categorizing photos on CD differently than photographic
prints? And are photographic prints and prints made from digital media
separated? We'd appreciate any input on your experiences with this.
