Dear Joy Mott and fellow Museum Professionals:

I am glad to see this "Services Clearinghouse" subject brought to this
discussion list. All too often, museums do not know where to turn for
dependable services.

I founded Museum Services International in the early 1980's precisely
for this very reason. Museums, Cultural Institutions and the people
connected with these institutions needed a comprehensive service
organization to which they could turn for their (very specialized)
planning and implementation service needs in all areas of operations.
However to start and operation such an organization, with its many
specialists, one would need to charge a tremendous administrative
overhead for the specialist's salaries - and most cultural institutions
could not afford this cost.

Therefore, MSI was founded as a comprehensive service organization which
could provide the services of specialists in all of the needed areas of
a particular project utilizing individuals with the required expertise
on an "outsourcing" or on-call basis. In other words, we have no
full-time staff until we are asked to assemble a team for a particular
project - large or small.

This type of organizational structure also allows us to provide services
in all areas. In other words, we are not limited by the expertise of a
permanent staff to a particular area of operations such as Exhibition
Design and Fabrication. We can assist in the planning of a new museum,
conduct a Feasibility Study for moving a museum - including an
examination of the Cultural Tourism Market in the proposed area, conduct
a Value Methodology Study on the planning of a new museum, or conduct a
museum security survey of a facility - to name just a few of our
projects.

MSI attempts to function as a very practical Clearinghouse for Services
of all types for the International Cultural and Museum Communities - and
due to the efforts of individuals such as Joy - we are listed in the
Open Directory Project (ODP) www.dmoz.org.

Kind Regards

Roger Wulff
President
