Dear Kate -
Latex paint remains sticky for years and years. Don't ever put anything on it that you would want to remove again. It will pull off any loose bits of wood, and it will pull off the Ethafoam and stick to your mallet. We use latex to paint pedestals and I always put a Mylar/Melinex isolating footprint under the artifacts. The suggestion to cover the ethafoam is certainly the easiest and safest that I have heard.

Subject: painting ethafoam

Good afternoon list,

Currently on exhibit, I have a very old mallet used in "striking machine" or test-of-strength games. It is made of unfinished wood, with a band of iron holding the head together. Currently, it is resting on several blocks of ethafoam near one of these machines, approximately 1 inch off the floor. The floor is painted a light brown color and the blocks of ethafoam are white, so they're very noticeable. We still have some of the paint around (just ordinary, latex paint available at any hardware or big-box store) and I'd like to paint the blocks to match -- but only if it'll be safe for the artifact. If I let the blocks dry thoroughly before putting them back out, will there be any forseeable negative consequences for the hammer?
And if so, can anyone suggest a different, low-budget course of action to make the blocks less noticeable?
