Keep in mind, too, the differences that tend to exist between city, state,
or federally-funded institutions and private not-for-profit museums. Across
the board, starting salaries will be low, but a job seeker should take into
consideration whether or not the job for which he or she is applying has the
potential for annual salary increases. Government-funded museums commonly
offer an annual cost of living salary adjustment as a standard practice. In
many non-profits, however, employees often find themselves going many years
without a pay increase.

Job seekers should also be wary of institutions that offer a particular
starting salary with promises of increasing it "soon." Although most museum
managers truly want their employees to be happy with their salary, they are
at the mercy of economic forces beyond their control and sometimes cannot
come through with promises made the year before.
