Position Announcement: Curator of Collections and Exhibits

The Brazoria County Historical Museum, located forty-five miles southwest of Houston, in Angleton, Texas, is seeking a full-time Collections and Exhibits Curator.  This is a full time position offering a minimum (Step One) salary of $21,566. However, the salary offered will be commensurate with the candidate's education, skills, training, and experience.  This is a Brazoria County government position, so includes all benefits afforded other County employees: Texas County District Retirement System, the Alternate (I.R.C. 457) Plan (supplemental retirement), medical, dental, sick-leave, vacation, and compensatory overtime (currently hour-for-hour for professionals).

Full Job Description

Curator of Collections and Exhibits

Reporting to the Museum Director, the Curator is responsible for the maintenance of all Museum collections and exhibits and environmental maintenance including but not necessarily limited to the following enumerated items.  The Curator must possess a Bachelors degree in Museum Studies or a closely related field.  The Curator leads the Museum's Adriance Library and Research Center team and is responsible for Museum operations in the Director's absence.


Specific Responsibilities

I.      Directly Manages Three-Dimensional Artifact Collections: acquires, registers, catalogs, classifies objects in Chenhall Nomenclature; completes acquisition or observation forms; completes data forms; completes donor cards; marks objects; completes condition reports; completes acknowledgment cards; provides for the basic conservation/preservation of objects; completes all loan forms; conducts loan negotiations with other organizations; maintains all collections data base records, refreshing same twice yearly on Museum's Internet site..

II.     Plans, Develops, Coordinates Museum Exhibits: creates, designs and coordinates building of exhibits, cases, furniture, etc.; creates, designs and installs objects and labels in exhibits; rotates objects in exhibits; cleans exhibits; arranges for and displays traveling exhibits; researches objects and topics for exhibits; maintains existing exhibits.

III.    Serves as Museum Liaison to all Exhibits-, Collections-, Education-related Volunteer Committees.  Stands in for Executive Director with other committees in his/her absence.

IV.     Assists in the conceptualization of grant-supported activities and assists in grant preparation.

V.      Monitors environmental controls and reports to Executive Director all problems arising therefrom.

VI.     Monitors Museum fire protection and security system and reports dysfunctions and/or makes recommendations for improvements to the Executive Director.

VII.    Assists in special museum projects when appropriate.

VIII.   Actively recruits, trains, assigns, and supervises volunteers within designated areas of responsibility, including County Community Service Volunteers (Probationers).

IX.       Develops, adjusts, and manages annual exhibits and collections budget.
