Development Announces the Following Courses for October/November 2002 in Washington, DC
APPRAISAL STUDIES IN FINE AND DECORATIVE ARTS PROGRAM:
CWAS 444 18th and 19th Century French Furniture
Louis XIV, XV and XVI period pieces as well as their revivals will be studied in depth. Learn the historical significance of the change in styles and taste with special attention given to current value. A comparison will be drawn between the sale of exceptional 18th and 19th century pieces. Students will study well-known cabinetmakers, and discuss appropriate cataloguing terms. Illustrated lectures and visits to prominent local collections are scheduled. This course is of particular importance to students interested in pursuing a career in the appraisal field, where one encounters a large amount of nineteenth- and twentieth-century furniture influenced by eighteenth-century French styles.

CWAS 545 Introduction to Tribal Rugs of the 19th Century
Tribal rugs are one of the oldest surviving forms of artistic expression, encompassing knotted and flatwoven rugs, kilims, bags and related objects from the populations of Asia. This introductory course focuses on rug production during the great Persian Revival Period. Students learn to recognize the design and structural characteristics of collectible and decorative antique rugs available in the marketplace. CWAS 433 The Art of the Cabinetmaker: 18th Century English Furniture
This three-day program will cover the stylistic and technical developments in English furniture from 1715 to 1815. Topics covered will include lectures on William Kent and the Palladian movement; the development of the Rococo 1740-1760; Furniture in the Age of Adam; Hepplewhite and Sheraton; Regency style. These lectures will consider
the context in which Cabinetmakers worked and analyze stylistic developments. Subsequent lectures on the furniture trade, cabinet-woods and a lecture on fakes and forgeries will enable the student to deepen their knowledge for the cataloguing of English furniture.
